The energy industry is of great interest to private equity firms as a result of changes in the industry’s business model and strong growth driven by increasing global energy demand. High oil prices, driven by supply/demand imbalances, are underpinning investment by oil-related companies in exploration and production (E&P). As oil companies have become more active, their demand for product-, people- and technology-related services has increased. Private equity has focused on service companies, which have benefited from oil companies’ growing tendency to outsource elements of their drilling, evaluation, development, construction and production activities.
