- How do I get into private equity?

- How much will I be asked to invest?
You will certainly be required to invest. The amount depends on the nature of the business, the capital structure of the transaction, your personal wealth and the return you are seeking from your investment.
- Will I have to take a cut in salary?
Private equity firms expect senior executives to accept financial risk as well as reward. Remuneration structures are biased towards equity-based compensation. Bonuses may therefore be lower than you are used to, but your annual basic cash compensation is unlikely to change.
- Will I need previous experience?
Other things being equal, private equity investors prefer to back senior executives with experience of private equity. But for candidates with the right industrial background, this is not important.
- What qualities do private equity firms look for in a manager?
In general, private equity firms seek exceptionally talented managers with a relevant industrial background, previous responsibility for an independent P&L, strategic decision-making capabilities, experience dealing with banks and leverage and ideally, a successful track record within a private equity-backed business.

Private equity firms usually invest over a three to five year period, then realise their investment in a stock market flotation or a sale to another company or private equity investor. Your own investment will be realised at the same time, at which point you may wish to stay on with the company, or leave it. If you have been successful, you will certainly be approached to consider fresh opportunities.
